(Porterville, CA)  The Tule River Indian Housing Authority (TRIHA) and its co-development partner, Self-Help Enterprises (SHE),  has received notification from the California Tax Credit Allocation Committee that it is the recipient of an award of federal tax credits in the amount of $1,100,954 annually for each of ten years. The funds will be used to construct 40 units of low income affordable housing for Tule River tribal members; 15 single family units and 25 town houses. The project known as Nupchi Xo’oy will be located in the city limits of Porterville. Ground breaking is expected to take place in December of this year with a project completion date of December 2020. Full occupancy of the units is expected by March 2021.

“We have been experiencing a serious housing crisis for years. The topography of our lands coupled with the lack of adequate infrastructure makes it difficult for us to construct such projects on reservation lands”, says Chairman Neil Peyron of the Tule River Tribal Council.  Chairman Peyron went on to say, “These 40 units of affordable housing will definitely improve the living standards of 40 of our tribal families”.

Self-Help Enterprises President and CEO, Tom Collishaw, said “SHE is extremely proud to be a joint partner with TRIHA in this major undertaking of bringing affordable housing to some of the most disadvantaged families of the Tule River community.” SHE is a nationally recognized community development organization whose mission is to work together with low-income families to build and sustain healthy homes and communities. Since 1965, SHE efforts have touched the lives of over 55,000 families.

Ray DePerry, Executive Director for TRIHA since 2012, “Said this is the first step in what could eventually be the future development of additional affordable housing for Tule River members. The day will come when projects such as the Nupchi Xo’oy will be built on the reservations lands of the Tule River people. Now that a cooperative partnership has been formed with SHE, the future for affordable housing opportunities for Tule River families just got a bit more possible.”
