Grand Opening of Northstar Courts in Hanford

Grand Opening of Northstar Courts in Hanford

Posted on October 31, 2024

On October 3rd, we celebrated the grand opening of Northstar Courts, a vital addition to our community, providing 72 units of permanent affordable housing in Hanford. The event drew over 100 community members who gathered in the property’s community room for a joyous celebration that included guest speakers, a ribbon-cutting ceremony, and family-friendly activities.

As co-developer of this project, alongside UPholdings, Self-Help Enterprises is proud to contribute to such an impactful initiative. The overwhelming response—over 2,000 applications received—highlights the urgent need for affordable housing in the region. While the property is now fully leased, interested applicants can still join a waitlist.

During the ceremony, our Vice President, Betsy McGovern-Garcia, spoke passionately about the significance of Northstar Courts. She stated, “Today is a special day for all of us here in this room and the Hanford community as we address the critical need for affordable housing. Northstar Courts is the result of strong partnerships, and we know it will have a lasting impact on both its residents and the surrounding area.”

The ribbon-cutting ceremony represented years of dedication and collaboration among various partners. Speakers included Jessica Hoff Berzac, President of UPholdings, and local leaders who shared their insights on the project’s impact. Northstar residents Sylvia Moreno and Stacey Lander also shared personal stories about how stable housing has transformed their lives.

Northstar Courts features one-, two-, and three-bedroom apartments designed for individuals and families, with some units reserved for households including farmworkers, people with disabilities, and those exiting homelessness. The units are income-restricted based on household size, ensuring that families in need can access this critical resource. The development is not only about providing shelter but fostering a supportive community, equipped with amenities such as onsite management, a large community room, a playground, outdoor seating, and access to behavioral health resources.

“This beautiful complex offers more than a safe home, it is a life change,” wrote Northstar resident Sylvia Moreno in a letter that was read during the ceremony. “It is the foundation to a new and positive life. Northstar also offers behavioral health resources that are available to us right here on the property. It is truly a blessing to be living here.”

This project would not have been possible without the support of key funding partners, including the California Debt Limit Allocation Committee, California Tax Credit Allocation Committee, California Department of Housing and Community Development, City of Hanford, Kings County, Walker Dunlop, and Key Bank.

We are excited about the positive impact Northstar Courts will have on the Hanford community and are grateful to everyone who played a role in bringing this project to life.
