Bank of the Sierra donated $40,000 to Visalia-based Self-Help Enterprises (SHE) through its Sierra Grant Program, which will support affordable housing, officials announced Monday.

The grant will support SHE initiatives, including affordable housing, homeownership, housing rehabilitation, sustainable energy, and emergency services including water access.

On Friday, state senator Shannon Grove (R-Bakersfield) hosted a water distribution event in Springville to give bottled water to residents. Grove has called on the state to allow for nonprofit Self-Help Enterprises to provide temporary water tanks, plumbing to tie into Springville’s service lines and about three million gallons of hauled water, according to a press release.
The state has provided grant funds for Self-Help to work with disadvantaged communities whose wells went dry during the drought.

What was once an old freight train will soon take locals to larger cities, because the town’s new transit center has broken ground.

“The city’s first transit center was previously based-off the design of the old railroad station in Farmersville, and it’ll be where all the (mainstay) bus lines that run through Farmersville (stop),” project manager at Self-Help Enterprises Jose Flores said.

State-owned property in the Central Valley is also becoming affordable homes. In April, developer Self-Help Enterprises broke ground on Guardian Village in Reedley, consisting of five residential buildings featuring 22 one-bedroom units, 14 two-bedroom units and 12 three-bedroom units.
