The council also got a sneak peak of the newest transit center that is being built in the city. The plans had been approved last year to get the city a multi-modal hub, or transit center, in the center of town to expand transportation opportunities and prepare for the upcoming High Speed Rail.

The approval of the project allowed city manager Jennifer Gomez to execute a memorandum of understanding (MOU) between the city and the nonprofit organization Self-Help Enterprises (SHE). The agreement established that SHE will take the lead on construction for the transit center project.

Self-Help Enterprises received $15,160,000 to preserve 60 homes at Villa de Guadalupe and $16,150,000 to preserve 64 homes at Goshen Village, both of which are located in Tulare County.

Tami McVay of Self-Help Enterprises, a San Joaquin Valley nonprofit, said her organization has been receiving about 30 calls a week to report dried wells. The state gave Self-Help about $30 million to provide water tanks, bottled water and new wells to residents who have no water for drinking, bathing or other purposes.

More affordable housing is coming in the form of single-family homes in southwest Fresno. Nonprofit Self-Help Enterprises will build 14 three- and four-bedroom homes. Mortgages could be reduced to $800 a month, through public and private programs, Fresno City Councilman Miguel Arias said.
