A group of organizations in the San Joaquin Valley are providing drinking water resources to those impacted by the drought. The California Partnership for the San Joaquin Valley Water Workgroup have created a plan and a list of resources for private well owners and small communities who have lost or are worried about losing access to drinking water due to shrinking groundwater levels.

A lot has happened over the past five years, but not much has changed in the tiny farmworker town of Okieville. Wells went dry en masse in Tulare County, including in Okieville, during the last drought in 2012-2016. Since then, the state has funded a new well for the town.

The state’s response to the water crisis that gripped tiny Teviston, California, earlier this summer should have been a no-brainer, according to Tulare County officials. The rural central San Joaquin Valley county, with help from the state, had seen wells go dry en masse during the 2012-2016 drought leaving hundreds of families without water for months on end.

The panel will also hear from state officials on the status of Groundwater Sustainability Plans. The California State Board of Food and Agriculture will be discussing local drought impacts in communities as well as efforts to address safe drinking water during drought.

It was just a year ago residents in Seville, an unincorporated community in northern Tulare County, were able to drink water from their taps for the first time in five years.
In May 2020, the state lifted the boil water advisory for the 100-home community located seven and a half miles east of Orosi after the county of Tulare rebuilt the water system, in part, with funding from the state following a campaign coordinated by the county, the Stone Corral School District, and local non-profits.

An inspiring and hopeful report on diverse ways to help the most vulnerable Californians to get ready for disasters is now available to the public through Listos California, the emergency preparedness campaign at the Governor’s Office of Emergency Services (Cal OES). The program was funded through a $50 million emergency allocation championed by Governor Gavin Newsom and state legislators. From 2019 – 2021, Listos California has reached 3.8 million people with low incomes, disabilities and language barriers, as well as older adults and other highly vulnerable Californians. In Tulare County through the leadership of Self-Help Enterprises, 24,593 residents learned five simple steps to get ready for any disaster.

After years of planning, Visalia’s first low-barrier homeless shelter is now on the horizon after council members unanimously approved $5 million to construct a 100-bed facility near Riverway Sports Park. The proposal would bring a shelter that serves the city’s estimated 540 unhoused people to an undeveloped lot north of the Dinuba Boulevard Target. The approval comes months after the Visalia City Council pledged to see a low-barrier navigation center operational in the city by 2023.

Visalia, Calif. (KFSN) — Plans are in motion to build a large low-barrier homeless shelter in the SouthValley’s biggest city. Visalia officials recently chose CSET, a non-profit that fights poverty, to take the lead on establishing the shelter.
